Sundial history. Early man would have grown to understand that the year was divided into seasons, the warmer bright times and the colder dark times would have been all too apparent. No one really knows when these changing times were first recorded with some kind of system but the marking of the length of shadows was undoubtedly the beginning. The earliest known “sundials” were in fact not dials as we know them but oblong in shape and date from the reign of Pharaoh Tuthmosis III around 1500bc. There is not really space on this site for a detailed essay on sundial history so I would recommend to the reader a wonderful book by Mark Lennox Boyd. “Sundials History, Art, People, Science” ISBN 0 7112 2494 3 pub Frances Lincoln.
